Speaking in What Leadership Looks Like in the New Normal: A Funders’ Perspective

M. John Richard anchored his forty-year leadership career in the not for profit sector. As Arsht Center CEO, he and his team, produced ten turn around years of unprecedented growth and cultural community impacts (2008-2018). The Miami Herald headlined his retirement with: Arsht Leaders Give Rave Reviews to Retiring Center President. John, early in his career, piloted the startup of Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation, Mountainside, NJ, as its first president and CEO. In 1989 he was recruited to engineer the $180 million fundraising campaign, public relations, and marketing startup of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ. He references the historic accomplishment of NJPAC as a 19-year labor of love. John likes to credit his membership and leadership in AFP as the source of continuing education in nonprofit leadership and management skill building. John continues his community leadership involvement as a board member volunteer on several health, education and cultural nonprofit organizations in Miami. “I have spent my entire leadership career living in the space between professional management and boards of volunteer directors. It is the territory where the successful actions of a mission-based organization attain historic goals.”
